OUT FOR AUSTRALIA
CHARITY
Sydney, Australia
Out For Australia is a volunteer-run charity who provides role models and mentors to LGBTQIA+ in the formative stages of their career. The idea is to guide them through the often difficult path of entering a new job while being their authentic self.
OFA’s goal is to empower the LGBTQIA+ community to thrive in their careers and be proud and confident of who they are.
I had the privilege of working with an incredible team of dedicated people to make this film. The goal was to present what OFA does via the experience of people who’s lifes have been changed by the mentoring program.
I used my classic documentary skills learned at film school, and the help of very talented editor Kelly Cameron, to turn hours of interviews into a few minutes of film.
It was important for potential sponsors, allies, recruiters and the public in general to understand that LGBTQIA+ people can refrain from coming out and from being their true self when they transition from education to the workplace. “Only 24.5% of LGBTQIA+ people aged 18-24 years in 2020 were out to everyone they work with, less than half compared to those over 35.” says the OFA team.
Their work all around Australia is a major step into a more inclusive workspace. This resonated with me enormously. I'm proud to have taken a little part of the journey.
